TrunkSniffer is now free!

Posted by Mike on July 16th, 2008

TrunkSniffer is an application I wrote a few years ago, which allows you to track MPT-1327 trunked radio networks using nothing more than a radio receiver and a soundcard. I managed to make the decoding algorithms the best in the industry - they would take any kind of audio, even noisy speaker audio from distant control channels, and successfully decode it. It was initially released as a commercial product, and amongst my clients were nationwide trunked network operators and military intelligence agencies from several countries.

Analog radio networks have slowly been replaced by digital ones, such as TETRA, and tracking MPT-1327 is not the fun it used to be, unless taxi firm traffic is your thing. There are still several interesting networks out there to track, and thus I have decided to re-release TrunkSniffer as freeware. Simply visit the TrunkSniffer page, where you can read a lot more about it, and what it can do, and download the installer plus the unlocked executable file that will allow you to run it unrestricted. Enjoy!

    Dick,

Why do you feel ripped off? I gave support to TrunkSniffer users while it was commercially available (the payment page stopped working ages ago), since then I moved onto other things, and I have now released it as freeware with no support.

    Francois,

You need to replace the .exe on the original install with the unlocked one that’s in the second zip file, then you will not see any registration screen.

    Hi Mike,
Is it XP compatible as I keep getting an error about not being able to register some .ocx file

    Tony,

Yes, it should work with XP - I think it was tested up to SP2, but unsure about SP3. What OCX is it complaining about?

    Hi Mike,

It is simple. After i bought the SW and the dongle, there were still things that could be better. But no new versions, no bugfixes. And the last year at least, no help in Yahoogroup.
Support is one, but improvement is a second thing. I was under the impression that there would be development. So to say the least, i am disapointed. You should not have asked money if you were not going to continue the product.

Give the guy a break, thank you for your FREE software. I’ve been trying to decode MPT1327 and make sense of it for many years. I appreciate all the hard work and effort into making this program. Many thanks once again.

    Cheers
    Tony.

Everything I’ve read about TrunkSniffer tells me it is a great program, trouble is, I cannot seem to get the download working!

Thanks very much for the software Mike, it gets a plug in this months “Radio User” magazine.

Of course it’s decoding fine with my AOR3000a but unfortunately the AOR radio options provided don’t remotely control this receiver.

If theres some sort of plug-in for additional radios I’d be grateful for any information.

hi mike thanks for making trunksniffer now free.its a shame that you no longer wish to upgrade it or suport it..you say that no one wishes to purchase it .i feel that the price for it was too high, however i would be willing to pay around 20 to 30 uk pounds for it (do not know what that is in euros) as the last time i looked it was upto 100 euros, which i feel is too high a price to pay especialy with many other trunk pragrams also free.heres hoping you wel in the other projects and that you may like to update trunksniffer in the future even if ocasionaly. thanks again.

Hey there Mike. Thank you for making trunksniffer free, I was just wondering, if you had any more information on a missing OCX?. I can’t even get it to run at this stage

  14. comment number 14 by: Mike

    Hi Ray,

What missing OCX, does the error message tell you its name?

  15. comment number 15 by: Ray

Hi Mike thanks for getting back.

It asks for Cpocket.OCX. It appears after I’ve installed it and attempt to run it

    Many thanks

    Ray

I have the same issue as Ray. Any ideas?

I will try to dig the OCX and post it, then you can try to manually register it on your system. Are you running Vista or XP?

I have tried downloading the so called free version five times I cut and pasted the free version but still it requires the key to be supplied. Does any one have any idea what might be causing this?

Make sure you have admin rights, and also check the size of the .exe that you have in the program’s folder, make sure it’s the same as the ‘free’ one.
